A vivid, often anguished imagination shines through in [Zustiak's] work... THE NEW YORKER

Amidst is a site-specific live performance/video installation that focuses on nostalgia as a place of entrapment on a journey “home.” It is the second installment of The Painted Bird Trilogy, a work in three parts choreographed and directed by Pavel Zuštiak. The trilogy’s title comes from Jerzy Kosinski’s controversial novel of the same name. Amidst is presented in a fluid theatrical structure, as audiences move freely amidst a sensory immersive installation at the intersection of dance performance and visual art.

PAST PRODUCTION - SHAKESPEARE'S WILL

JULY 24, 2010 - "Shakespeare's Will" (Canadian playwright, Verne Thiessen) - Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife's, story. A one-woman piece w/ musical interludes which introduces Anne Hathaway as she returns home from her husband's funeral, his will in hand. Thiessen uses his Will and Anne's relationship to explore contemporary relationship issues. His Anne is in many ways a modern woman in her 16th century world, which we see as she recalls their time together and apart and their unique wedding vow. Allowing a visualization of an Elizabethan woman juxtaposed against an immense expansion of glass, a contemporary architectural setting, the production is staged in the Ellerbee Road Unitarian Church sanctuary, Shreveport, Louisiana.

FOOL FOR LOVE POSTPONED

FOOL FOR LOVE - SAM SHEPARD - Sam Shepard is considered a legendary American playwright. This will be the first of his works to be produced in Shreveport. "Fool for Love" is a powerful story of a tumultuous relationship between two high school lovers whom we find some twenty years later still enmeshed in the relationship. They remember and reflect upon the never-revealed secret of their relationship. Keep a lookout for January production dates. This production is a collaboration between: LSU-S Dept. SATIE

Erik Satie: Composer influencing Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc. Because his music was ahead of his time and regarded as timeless, he also had a great influence on many modern composers. Considered eccentric and an outsider with projects of his own. Founded his own church. Valued his privacy greatly. Never let anyone see his apartment where he lived the last 27 years of his life. Was known to have had only one relationship - in 1893 with the model, painter & former trapeze artist, Suzanne Valalon. Click on his photo to read more and hear fragments of his compositions.

Joyce

Lucia Joyce: Misunderstood throughout her life and in history, as well, the daughter of the famed writer, James Joyce, whose style revolutionized early 20th century literature. Considered her father's muse, particularly the young female characters in "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake." A recent biography of her by Professor Carol Schloss imagines her life as an artist in her own right, her role in her father's work from an early age and subject to emotional breakdowns. This is the first heavily researched biography to look at Lucia's behavior within the context of her home life and the role she played in her father's work. Tragically, she died after residing many years in a mental institution. Her mother visited her once in ten years and her brother twice. Joyce himself died while attempting to get papers that would release Lucia before the Nazi occupation of Paris. She learned of his death in a newspaper article. Almost as engrossing as the life of the Joyce family is the behavior of Joyce's grandson with regard to what the Estate will and will not allow access for any reason. He personally destroyed hundreds of letters between Lucia and her father. Dr. Schloss, in a long-term legal battle, gained more access than anyone to date.
